Something I wished I knew 8 years ago…
Over the last 8 years I have been mentoring veterinarians who are transitioning into the field of emergency and critical care. I focused my efforts on teaching them the clinical knowledge that they need to know as fast and as effective as possible thinking that this is what they needed. Essentially I thought …
More Clinical Knowledge = Success
… and it worked, they succeed but then I realised I missed something, as I watched vets stagnant after a period of rapid growth. That was when I realised that in fact I had stagnated myself. I realised that I missed something profound, the equation was not complete
More Clinical Knowledge DOES NOT = Success
Having a thirst for clinical knowledge is great but it not the answer. I see people head down the vicious cycle of learning more and more clinical knowledge thinking it would make them better …. but never feeling like they were satisfied. Or I see them arrive at a point like me where they realise more clinical information is not the answer but they do not know where to find what they need and then they give up thinking that they have reached the pinnacle of what is possible for them.
So I went searching, searching not just for myself but for the team…
What was I missing?
What would make me happy?
What does happiness mean?
What would being successful in my career look like for me?
What would help take my career to the next level?
Upon reflection I realised I did not prepare those that I mentored as well as I thought I did. They missed out on the other half of the equation. The critical part that when combined with clinical knowledge the result is not just success, but success on many more levels.
Clinical Knowledge + ??? = Success
It is clear to me now that we need to share what is missing. So I bring you my “Tribe of Mentors”, they will share their secrets and the tools they used to supercharge their careers so that you can “Unleash” your full potential.
